Liquor by Poppy Z. Brite

I loved this story from begninning to end and can't wait to read Prime. While I never cooked in New Orleans, I did my time in food service. I think this helped a great deal in being able to identify with the characters, but I probably would have liked them anyway. Rickey and G-Man make a great team, each completing the other really. It also helped that I used to work for a coked out manager, also named Mike. Poppy does an excellent job of setting scenes and you can see and hear everything that is happening. It was very easy to picture Rickey and G-Man's apartment, Lenny's kitchen, all of the places they hung out and all stages of their restaurant coming to fruition. I loved following them through their trials and triumphs. I was sad for them when things didn't seem to be working out, angry at people that tried to sabotage them, and joyous over their opening night and success. Did I mention I REALLY liked this book? I have also read Exquisite Corpse, and Wormwood. I loved them as well, and Liquor was an interesting departure from both. 5 Beans!
