![]() Teknolust Directed by Lynn Hershman Leeson Starring Tilda Swinton, Jeremy Davies, James Urbaniak, Karen Black, Thomas Jay Ryan and Josh Kornbluth ---------------------------- All I can say is wow. At first I was repulsed, then I became intrigued, and finally fascinated. Tilda Swinton treats us to a quadruple role. Not only is she the shy Dr. Rosetta Stone, she also plays her "offspring" Ruby, Olive, and Marine. She decides to mix her DNA with an experimental AI program and the results are interesting to say the least. There are plenty-o-synopsis type reviews out there, so if you want plot details, etc - please look elsewhere. I can tell you that one of the scenes at the beginning made me say "EEEWWWhhh" out loud. But, like a car crash - I couldn't look away. The acting is as mechanical as it should be - no more or less. The overall look of the film is very glossy and sharp. It definitely qualifies as eye candy. Tilda Swinton does a fine job playing all the lead characters, and Jeremy Davies is completely believable as the inept copy boy. This movie has plenty of tongue in cheeky-ness. This surprised me. I avoided all the online reviews until I could see it for myself, and was ready for something very artsy and serious. It does deliver that on some levels, but it's not near as cold and stark as it could be. Overall it has a good mix of technology, art, and humor - in a variable order. so mojo's grandfather is dead. that was the theme of my dreams this morning. he had said that he was going to send $9 to me for a skinny puppy cd, a letter with a picture, and finally a video tape. i had driven to lafayette to visit mojo and his family and brought everything with me. the letter and the $9 had arrived on a monday, then the video tape on wednesday i think. we were going to be off work on thursday because of the race(?) anyway, i had driven all the way there and the letter and picture had indicated that even after a nasty fall, grandpa was ok. in his picture he was really thin and had to wear some kind of black headgear to hold his neck and head in alignment. he had lost part of his memory and mentioned that some relatives had dropped by. he didn't recognize any of them and said that it was like meeting them for the 1st time. anway, i took the tape to mojo and when we put it in the vcr i couldn't have been more shocked. it was footage of everyone coming home from grandpa's funeral. i hadn't played the tape before and had no idea that that was what was on it. i didn't want to be the one to tell mojo and the guilt was overwhelming. i couldn't help but cry and apologize profusely. when i tried to leave the floods started, literally. there was a flash flood warning in the area and as i was standing on the street talking to mojo's mom, a HUGE wave came up over the horizon and flooded the street. oddly, it quickly drained away and everything was fine again. when i tried to leave again, i hit 2 cars out in the lawn, but eventually was on my way home. the next day i saw mojo and apologized for my breakdown the night before. my voice was all raspy and i started crying again. he assured me that it was ok, and that i couldn't have known what was on the tape. there was one part where i was hanging out at mojo's parent's place and i was going through some drawers in the bathroom. there was a diploma of some kind printed on a mirror - for a truck driving school i think. and another for a beauty college. on the couch there was a blackboard with something on it written in white candle wax. mojo said that his mother or grandmother did it, and had written notes like that for some time now. there are a lot of fleeting details that are starting to leave now - maybe they'll resurface later. |
